Compress an image to 200 KB

A 200 KB limit usually means a document: a scanned certificate, an ID proof or a mark sheet. Add the image and it comes back under the limit, still readable.

How to use the 200 KB image compressor

Add a photo or a scanned document image and download it under 200 KB: the limit is preset and the output is JPG. A scanned page stays readable at this size, and a photo up to about 1000 pixels wide keeps high quality.

  1. Add the scan or photoAn image file, not a PDF. Crop away the desk or scanner bed first.
  2. Let it searchThe target is preset to 200 KB and the output to JPG.
  3. Check it is readableZoom into the after preview before you download.

About this tool

Where a form caps a photograph at 50 KB, it tends to give supporting documents 200 KB or so. That is enough for a clean photo about 1000 pixels wide, or for a scanned page that is mostly white paper, which compresses far better than a photograph of the same size.

This page finds the highest JPG quality that fits under 200 KB. If the scan is so large that no quality setting can reach the limit, it is scaled down step by step until one does, and the result tells you what was done.

What you get

  • Target preset to 200 KB, with JPG output
  • Suits scanned pages, certificates and ID proofs
  • PNG output option for crisp black-on-white text
  • Reports the quality and scale that were used
  • Batch up to 20 documents against the same limit

When to use the 200 KB image compressor

Certificates and mark sheets

Application portals ask for scans of supporting documents and typically allow a few hundred kilobytes for each.

Identity and address proofs

A photographed ID card or utility bill has to stay legible after compression, and 200 KB leaves room for that.

Product photos for listings

Classified sites and small shops often cap each picture at 200 KB to keep pages light.

Attachments for web forms

Contact and support forms with a small attachment limit will take a screenshot or photo at this size.

How it works

A scanned page and a photograph of the same pixel size compress very differently. JPG works on small blocks of the picture, and a block of plain white paper costs almost nothing to store. Most of a text page is exactly that, so the bytes are spent on the thin strokes of the letters. A photograph has detail in every block and needs several times as many bytes to look as clean.

The weakness of JPG on documents is at the edges of letters, where it leaves faint ripples. If that hurts legibility, the PNG output takes a different route: it stores every pixel exactly and saves space by cutting the number of colours, stepping down from 256 to 16. A clean black-on-white scan survives that almost untouched. A photograph of a page under uneven light does not, and is better left as JPG.

Common problems and how to fix them

Small print is hard to read
The scan had too many pixels for the limit and was scaled down. Crop to the part that matters, or scan at 150 DPI, so fewer pixels have to share the 200 KB.
Letters have a halo or ripple around them
That is JPG compression on sharp edges. Try PNG as the output format for a clean scan, or start from a higher-contrast scan.
A photographed page looks grey and uneven
Shadows and paper texture are detail the encoder has to store. Photograph the page flat, in even light, and crop tightly before compressing.
I need to send several pages
Each image is compressed on its own, so every page gets its own 200 KB. This tool does not merge pages into one file or make a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 200 KB?

Add it above. The target is preset to 200 KB, so the tool searches for the highest quality that fits and returns a file just under the limit.

Is 200 KB enough for a scanned document?

Usually. A page scanned at 150 DPI is about 1240 × 1754 pixels, and because most of it is blank paper it compresses well enough to stay readable at 200 KB. A 300 DPI scan has four times the pixels and will be scaled down.

The text in my document looks fuzzy. What can I do?

JPG softens sharp edges such as text. Switch the output format to PNG, which keeps edges crisp by reducing the number of colours instead. It works best on clean black-on-white scans. For a photographed page, crop away the background first so the bytes go to the text.

How large can a photo be at 200 KB?

About 1000 × 740 pixels at high quality and about 1400 × 1050 with moderate compression, for a typical photograph.

Can I compress a PDF to 200 KB here?

No. This tool reads image files such as JPG and PNG. Save or export the page as an image first, then compress it.

What resolution should I scan at for a 200 KB limit?

150 DPI is enough for a page of normal print to stay readable, and it keeps the pixel count low enough to fit. 300 DPI gives four times as many pixels, which the limit cannot hold, so the tool has to scale the scan down anyway.

Can I compress several documents to 200 KB at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 images and press "Process all images". Each is fitted to the limit separately and they download together as a ZIP.
