How to use the webp converter

To convert an image to WebP, upload it and set quality to about 80. WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than JPEG at matching visual quality, and 50-80% smaller than a transparent PNG. Every current browser supports it.

  1. Add your imagesJPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and AVIF are all accepted.
  2. Set quality80 is a good default; transparency in the source is preserved automatically.
  3. Download WebPSave a single file or the whole batch as a ZIP.

About this tool

WebP was designed to replace both JPEG and PNG on the web. In practice it delivers files 25-35% smaller than JPEG at matching visual quality, and it supports an alpha channel, so it can also replace transparent PNGs at a fraction of the size.

Support is universal in current browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14+ and every modern mobile browser. The one place to be careful is older desktop software and some print workflows, which may still expect JPG or PNG.

What you get

  • Converts from any format your browser can decode
  • Alpha transparency preserved from PNG sources
  • Quality slider with live size feedback
  • Batch conversion with ZIP download
  • Clear warning if your browser cannot encode WebP

When to use the webp converter

Cutting page weight on a live site

Converting every JPEG and PNG to WebP often removes a megabyte or more from a photo-heavy page, directly improving Largest Contentful Paint.

Replacing transparent PNGs

This is WebP's biggest win. UI graphics, logos and icons keep their alpha channel at a fraction of the PNG size.

Reducing hosting bandwidth

A third less data on every image request adds up quickly on a site with real traffic.

Preparing images for a CMS that supports WebP

WordPress, Shopify, Ghost and most modern platforms accept WebP uploads directly now.

How it works

WebP's lossy mode is derived from the VP8 video codec. Where JPEG only transforms each block independently, WebP predicts each block from its already-decoded neighbours and then encodes just the prediction error. Most blocks in a real photograph resemble the block above or to the left, so there is far less residual data to store. That is where the 25-35% saving over JPEG comes from.

Transparency is stored as a separate alpha plane alongside the colour data, which is why WebP can combine lossy colour with an exact alpha channel. PNG has to store every colour losslessly to keep its transparency, so replacing a transparent PNG with WebP is usually a much bigger win than replacing a JPEG.

There is one limitation. The browser's canvas.toBlob() only produces lossy WebP, at any quality setting including 100. True lossless WebP exists in the format specification, but no browser exposes it. That needs a native encoder such as cwebp -lossless. Quality 100 here gets close at a noticeably larger file size.

Common problems and how to fix them

My browser says it cannot save WebP
You are on a very old browser build. WebP encoding has been available in Chrome and Opera since 2014, Firefox since 2019 and Safari since version 14 in 2020.
The WebP is bigger than my JPEG
You are probably converting an already-compressed JPEG at a higher quality than it was saved with. Lower the WebP quality to 78-82. You cannot recover detail the JPEG already discarded, so there is no benefit to encoding it more precisely.
Some desktop program will not open the file
Older editors and some print workflows still reject WebP. Convert back with the WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG tool.
My animated GIF only converted one frame
Canvas APIs expose a single frame. Animated WebP requires a dedicated encoder outside the browser.
Colours shifted slightly after conversion
Embedded ICC profiles are not preserved; output is effectively sRGB. This matters for print work and rarely matters on screen.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller are WebP files?

For photographs, expect 25-35% smaller than a JPEG of equivalent visual quality. For transparent graphics replacing PNG, savings of 50-80% are common.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. It has a full 8-bit alpha channel, exactly like PNG. That is its main advantage over JPEG.

Can this produce lossless WebP?

No. The browser's canvas encoder always produces lossy WebP, even at quality 100. True lossless WebP needs a native encoder such as cwebp. Setting quality to 100 here gets very close, at a larger file size.

Which browsers support WebP?

All current ones: Chrome, Edge, Opera and Android since 2014, Firefox since 2019, Safari and iOS since version 14 (2020). Only Internet Explorer and very old Safari versions lack support.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

AVIF compresses better still, often 20% smaller than WebP, but encoding support in browsers is inconsistent, and decode is slower. WebP is the safe default today; try AVIF in the Image Format Converter and check whether your browser can produce it.

Is WebP better than JPEG and PNG?

For the web, almost always. It is roughly 25-35% smaller than JPEG at matching quality and supports transparency like PNG. The exceptions are workflows that require a specific format, and archival masters where you want a lossless original.

Do I need a fallback for browsers without WebP?

Rarely. Support is universal in current browsers. If you must support Internet Explorer or Safari 13 and earlier, use a <picture> element with a WebP <source> and a JPEG <img> fallback; browsers pick the first format they understand.

Does WebP help SEO?

Yes, indirectly. Smaller images improve Largest Contentful Paint, which is a Core Web Vitals metric and a ranking signal. The file format itself is not a ranking factor, but the speed it produces is.
