How to use the png to webp

To convert PNG to WebP, upload your file, set quality to about 85 and download. Transparency is preserved exactly. Transparent PNGs typically shrink by 50-80%, which is the largest single saving available for logos, icons and UI graphics.

  1. Add PNG filesTransparent and opaque files both work.
  2. Set quality85 is a safe default for graphics with sharp edges.
  3. DownloadSave single files or a ZIP of the batch.

About this tool

This is where WebP gains the most. A transparent PNG stores every pixel losslessly; WebP can store the same image with lossy RGB and an exact alpha channel, which routinely cuts file size by 50-80% with no visible difference.

Because the alpha channel is preserved exactly, edges stay clean against any background, with no white halo and no fringing.

What you get

  • Full 8-bit alpha transparency preserved
  • Typically 50-80% smaller than the source PNG
  • Batch conversion with ZIP download
  • Quality slider with instant preview
  • No upload: conversion happens on your device

When to use the png to webp

UI graphics and icon sets

A folder of transparent PNGs is often the heaviest part of an app or site's asset bundle. Converting to WebP routinely halves it or better.

Logos on a website

Alpha edges stay clean against any background colour, with no white halo and no fringing.

Illustrations with soft shadows

Semi-transparent shadows are expensive in PNG because every pixel is stored losslessly. WebP encodes the colour lossily while keeping the alpha exact.

Replacing PNG sprites

Sprite sheets are large, flat and highly repetitive, which makes them good candidates for a big reduction.

How it works

This is where WebP's advantage is largest. PNG must store every colour value losslessly to keep its alpha channel, so a soft drop shadow costs as much per pixel as sharp detail does. WebP separates the two: the colour plane can be encoded lossily while the alpha plane remains exact, so the shadow costs almost nothing and the edges stay perfectly clean.

Because the alpha channel is preserved bit-for-bit, anti-aliased edges composite correctly against any background. This is the practical difference from converting to JPEG, where transparency has to be flattened onto a chosen colour and the result only looks right on that one background.

Sharp edges are where lossy artefacts are most visible, which is why the recommended quality for logos and icons is higher than for photographs. At quality 90-95 a logo is visually indistinguishable while still being substantially smaller than the PNG.

Common problems and how to fix them

The transparency looks wrong or has a fringe
Check the quality setting. Below about 80, lossy colour encoding near an alpha edge can produce visible fringing. Raise it to 90 for graphics with hard edges.
My tiny icon barely shrank
Very small PNGs are already close to the format's overhead floor. Below a few kilobytes there is little left to save, and inlining as Base64 may serve you better.
The WebP is larger than the PNG
Your PNG is probably a small flat graphic with very few colours, which PNG stores extremely efficiently. Keep the PNG, or try the PNG Compressor's palette reduction instead.
I need the file to stay PNG
Use the PNG Compressor, which reduces the colour palette while keeping the PNG format and transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Is transparency really preserved?

Yes. WebP stores a full 8-bit alpha channel exactly like PNG, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges survive intact.

How much smaller will my file be?

For UI graphics, logos and icons, 50-80% is typical, and photographs saved as PNG can drop by 85-95%. Flat images with very few colours may already be tiny as PNG. In that case, keep the PNG.

What quality should I use for logos?

85-92. Sharp edges are where lossy artefacts are most visible, so be less aggressive than you would with a photograph.

Can I go back to PNG afterwards?

Yes, with the WebP to PNG tool. It restores the PNG container but not the detail discarded during the lossy WebP encode.

Can I convert several PNGs at once?

Yes. Drop up to 20 files, press "Process all images" and download the WebP versions as a single ZIP.

Is this lossless WebP?

No. Browser canvas encoders only produce lossy WebP, even at quality 100. The alpha channel is exact, but the colour data is lossily encoded. True lossless WebP requires a native tool such as cwebp -lossless.
