How to use the image to jpg converter

Add images in any supported format, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF or SVG, and each one is converted to JPG in your browser. Set the quality, pick a colour to replace transparency, and download the files singly or as a ZIP.

  1. Add your imagesAny mix of formats, up to 20 files.
  2. Set quality and background90 suits most photos. The background colour replaces transparency.
  3. Download the JPGsOne at a time, or all together as a ZIP.

About this tool

Most conversion pages handle one pair of formats. This one takes whatever you have. A folder holding screenshots as PNG, downloads as WebP and an old BMP can go in together and come out as a matching set of JPG files.

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a colour you choose, white by default. It is also lossy: the quality slider sets how much detail is traded for a smaller file. Animated GIF and WebP files are converted from their first frame only.

What you get

  • Accepts PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG in one batch
  • Real encoder quality slider
  • Background colour for transparent areas
  • Optional resize while converting
  • Batch up to 20 files with ZIP download

When to use the image to jpg converter

Uploads that only accept JPG

Application forms, print shops and photo kiosks often list JPG as the only allowed format.

Tidying a mixed folder

Convert a batch of screenshots, downloads and scans to one format so they sort and open the same way.

Sharing with older software

Presentation tools, document editors and TV photo viewers that predate WebP and AVIF still read JPG.

Shrinking photographic PNGs

A photo saved as PNG is several times larger than it needs to be; as a JPG it is a fraction of the size.

How it works

Each file is decoded by your browser, drawn onto a canvas and encoded again as a JPG with the quality you chose. Because the decoding is the browser's own, the list of formats the page accepts is the list your browser can open, which in a current browser covers PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG. Before a transparent image is encoded, the canvas is painted with the background colour, since JPG has nowhere to store transparency.

JPG saves space by dropping detail the eye is least likely to miss, and usually by storing colour more coarsely than brightness. That suits photographs and is hard on anything with sharp edges: lettering, logos and interface screenshots pick up faint smudges around their outlines. Raising the quality slider reduces the effect at the cost of a larger file. Metadata from the source, such as EXIF, is not copied into the JPG.

Common problems and how to fix them

A transparent logo now has a white box around it
JPG has no transparency. Set the background colour to match the page the image will sit on, or keep the file as PNG or WebP.
An animated GIF became a still picture
Only the first frame is converted. This tool does not produce animated output.
An HEIC photo will not load
HEIC is not supported, because most browsers cannot decode it. On an iPhone, sharing or exporting the photo as JPG gives you a file this page can read.
The JPG is bigger than the file I started with
This happens with flat graphics and with WebP or AVIF sources, which compress more efficiently than JPG. Lower the quality slider, or keep the original format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an image to JPG?

Add the image above. It is converted in your browser straight away, and you can adjust the quality before you download the JPG.

Which formats can I convert to JPG?

PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG, plus JPG itself if you want to save it again at a different quality. AVIF needs a current browser. HEIC photos from an iPhone are not supported.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with the background colour you pick. White is the default; choose another colour before downloading if the image will sit on a coloured page.

Does converting to JPG reduce quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy. At the default quality of 90 the loss is very hard to see on a photograph. Text, logos and screenshots show it sooner, as faint halos around sharp edges; keep those as PNG when you can.

Can I convert several images to JPG at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files in any mix of formats, press "Process all images" and download the results as a ZIP.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They are two spellings of one format. If you only need to change a .jpeg extension to .jpg, the JPEG to JPG Converter does it without re-compressing the picture.

What quality should I choose?

90 is a good default for photographs. Around 80 makes noticeably smaller files with little visible change, and 95 or more is only worth it for images you plan to edit again.
