How to use the JPG to PDF 100 KB converter

Add your picture and download: the limit is preset to 100 KB and the highest quality that fits is found automatically. One page of ordinary print stays readable at this size. For two or more pages the 100 KB is shared, so each page gets less.

  1. Add your pictureA photo or a scan of the page. One page reads best at this size.
  2. Let the page fit itThe highest quality under 100 KB is found for you.
  3. Download the PDFInside the limit, whichever way the form counts a kilobyte.

About this tool

100 KB is the limit many upload forms set for a supporting document, and it is enough for one page that has to be read: a certificate, a mark sheet, a bill, an identity card. Add the picture and this page turns it into a one-page PDF that stays inside the limit.

Nothing has to be guessed. The picture is encoded at one quality after another until the highest one that fits is found, and if quality alone cannot bring the file under 100 KB, the picture's pixel size comes down a step and the search runs again. The note under the preview reports the quality and the size it settled on.

For a single full page of text, expect a picture about 900 pixels wide: ordinary print is readable on a screen, and very small print is soft. Two pages share the 100 KB and each drops to the level of a 50 KB page, so where you can, keep a 100 KB PDF to one page.

When to use the JPG to PDF 100 KB converter

Certificates and mark sheets

A single-page certificate photographed with a phone, turned into the small PDF an admission or scholarship form asks for.

Proof of address or identity

A utility bill or an ID photographed flat, as a one-page PDF that stays inside a 100 KB upload field.

Signed declarations

A one-page declaration that was printed, signed and photographed, sent back as a PDF.

Prescriptions and reports

A doctor's prescription or a one-page lab report attached to an insurance or reimbursement request.

How it works

The fit is found by bisection. The picture is encoded at a quality in the middle of the range and the size compared with its budget; the next attempt goes halfway up or halfway down, and after about eight encodings the highest quality that fits is known to within a point or two. If even quality 25 is too large, the picture is scaled to a smaller pixel size, chosen from how far over the budget it was, and the search is repeated. A 100 KB budget starts the picture at no more than 1.6 megapixels, which is why a 12 megapixel photo is always reduced.

A full page of text landed at about 890 by 1256 pixels and quality 29 in a test, and a 12 megapixel photograph of a landscape at about 1440 by 1080 and quality 62: the photograph compresses more easily, so it keeps a higher quality at a similar pixel count. Printed on A4, 890 pixels across the page is a little over 100 dots per inch, which is the point where body text is readable and fine detail starts to go.

Common problems and how to fix them

Small print is fuzzy
At 100 KB the page is about 900 pixels wide. Crop to the document's edges so that all of those pixels cover the page, retake the photo in better light, or use a 200 KB limit if you are allowed one.
I added two pages and both got worse
The 100 KB is for the whole PDF, so two pages get about 50 KB each. If the form takes one file per document, make two PDFs of 100 KB each instead.
The photo has a dark, grainy background
Grain and shadow are expensive to store and take bytes from the text. Photograph the page on a plain surface in daylight, or crop the background away before adding the picture.
The upload form still says the file is too big
Compare the size in bytes given in the note with the form's limit. A form that means 100 KB for several files together, or that states the limit in bytes, needs a smaller number typed into the size field.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text in my document still be readable at 100 KB?

For one page, usually yes. In a test a full page of text came out about 890 pixels wide, on which normal print reads comfortably on a screen and the smallest print is soft. A page with less on it, such as a certificate with a few lines, does better than that.

My phone photo is 3 MB. Can it become a 100 KB PDF?

Yes. The picture is scaled down and compressed until the PDF fits; a 12 megapixel photo of a page typically ends up around 900 by 1200 pixels. Crop away the background around the page first and more of the 100 KB goes to the page itself.

How many pages can a 100 KB PDF hold?

As many as 20 will be accepted, but the limit is shared. Two pages get about 50 KB each and three about 33 KB each, which is too little for text. If you have several pages and a 100 KB limit, check whether the limit is for each file or for all of them together.

What if I need a different limit, such as 150 KB?

Type it in the size field. The 100 here is only where the page starts; any number in KB or MB works the same way.

Is the 100 KB limit met exactly?

The PDF is always at or under 100,000 bytes when the page reports success, usually within two or three percent of it. It is never over.

Can I use a PNG or a screenshot?

Yes. Any picture your browser can open is accepted and is stored in the PDF as a JPEG. A clean screenshot compresses well and stays sharper than a photograph of the same page.

Does the paper size change the file size?

No. A4, Letter and the others only decide the sheet the picture is placed on. The bytes are in the picture, and the limit is met the same way on any paper.
