About this tool
Three by four inches is a small upright print, a little larger than a passport photo. It turns up on some application and admission forms, and it suits small keepsake prints and ID-style portraits. Its 3:4 shape matches the upright photos most phones take, so a portrait usually needs no cropping at all.
A landscape photo starts as a 4 by 3 print for the same reason. Forcing it into the upright shape means losing about half of it, and this page puts that choice in your hands. The crop box has the 3:4 shape, and you move and resize it over the picture until it frames what matters. The result is resized to the pixel count your chosen DPI needs, and the DPI is written into the file so a print shop or a layout program sees a 3 by 4 inch image.

When to use the 3 × 4 inch photo resizer
Photos for application and admission forms
Some institutions ask for a 3 by 4 inch photograph to be attached or uploaded with the form.
Small prints for an album or a wallet
Several 3 by 4 inch pictures can be laid out on one larger sheet and cut apart after printing.
Portraits for name boards and badges
Event badges and office name boards often leave an upright window of about this size for a face.
Product photos in a catalogue grid
A set of pictures cropped to the same 3:4 frame lines up neatly in rows.

How it works
The crop box and the output have the same 3:4 proportion, so the selected part of the photo is scaled evenly in both directions and nothing is stretched. Scaling down is done in steps, halving the picture until it is close to the target and then making the final adjustment, which keeps edges cleaner than a single large reduction.
Whether the result is sharp depends on how many pixels were inside the crop box. A 3 × 4 inch print at 300 DPI needs 900 × 1200, a little over a megapixel, so almost any phone photo has plenty to spare even after cropping to a face. If the selection holds fewer pixels than that, the picture is enlarged to make up the difference, and the result note says by how much.
Common problems and how to fix them
- The crop box will not take the shape I want
- It is fixed to the output shape. To crop to a different shape, change the numbers in the size fields, or use the Image Cropper for a free crop.
- The result says the picture was enlarged
- The selected area was smaller than 900 × 1200 pixels. Make the crop box larger, lower the DPI to 200, or start from a higher-resolution photo.
- The print came out a different size
- Turn off "fit to page" in the print dialog and print at actual size. The file carries its size, but the dialog can override it.
- My form says 3 × 4 cm, not inches
- That is a much smaller picture, 354 × 472 pixels at 300 DPI. Use the centimetre resizer for it.
Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is a 3 × 4 inch photo?
900 × 1200 pixels at 300 DPI. At 200 DPI it is 600 × 800, and at 600 DPI it is 1800 × 2400.
Is 3 × 4 inches the same as a passport photo?
No. Passport photos are smaller: 2 × 2 inches in the United States and 35 × 45 mm, about 1.4 × 1.8 inches, in most other countries. For those sizes use the Passport Photo Cropper.
What is 3 × 4 inches in centimetres?
7.62 × 10.16 cm. If your form gives the size as 3 × 4 cm instead, that is a much smaller picture; use the centimetre resizer for it.
Can I keep the whole photo instead of cropping?
Yes. Choose "Fit the whole picture". The photo is scaled to fit inside the 3 × 4 inch frame and the leftover strips are filled with the background colour you pick.
What aspect ratio is 3 × 4 inches?
3:4 upright, or 4:3 turned sideways. It is the same shape as the photos most phone cameras take, which is why an upright phone photo fits it with nothing trimmed.
How do I print several 3 × 4 photos on one sheet?
This page makes one photo at a time. Download it, then place copies on a larger page in a document or photo program. Four fit on a US Letter or A4 sheet with room to cut between them.
Can I get a 3 × 4 photo with a white border?
Yes. Choose "Fit the whole picture" and set the background colour to white. A photo of a different shape is then placed inside the frame with white on two sides.
