About this tool
A picture sent to a printer as it comes is scaled by the print dialog, and the result depends on settings you may not see. Putting it on an A4 canvas first removes the guesswork: the file is the page, and it prints edge to edge at the size you saw on screen.
By default the whole picture is fitted on the page and the space left over is filled with a colour, white unless you choose another. That suits scanned documents, certificates and artwork that must not lose an edge. Switch to Crop to fill for a photo that should cover the sheet, and drag the crop box to choose which part is kept. The resolution you pick is saved in the file, so it opens as A4 in print and layout programs.
What you get
- Exactly 210 × 297 mm, portrait or landscape
- 300 DPI by default, or 72 to 600 and any other value
- Fit the whole picture on the page, or crop to fill it
- Margin colour of your choice
- JPG or PNG output with the DPI saved in the file
When to use the A4 image resizer
Printing a photo on a home printer
A file that is already the size of the paper prints the way it looks on screen, with no surprises from the print dialog.
Scanned documents that must be A4
Portals and offices that ask for A4 pages reject phone photos of documents at odd sizes; placing each on an A4 canvas fixes that.
Certificates and posters
Artwork made at another size can be centred on an A4 sheet with a margin in a colour that suits it.
Pages for a PDF
Images that are all exactly A4 make a tidy document when they are combined, with no pages of different sizes.
A4 in pixels at each resolution
| Resolution | A4 in pixels | Megapixels | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 595 × 842 | 0.5 MP | Documents that are only read on a screen |
| 150 DPI | 1240 × 1754 | 2.2 MP | Drafts and pages to send by email |
| 200 DPI | 1654 × 2339 | 3.9 MP | Forms and scanned pages |
| 300 DPI | 2480 × 3508 | 8.7 MP | Photos and print-shop work |
| 600 DPI | 4961 × 7016 | 34.8 MP | Line art and archive copies |
How it works
A4 belongs to the ISO 216 paper series, in which every sheet has sides in the ratio of one to the square root of two, about 1 to 1.414. That ratio is not shared by any camera: a phone photo is 3:4 and a DSLR frame is 2:3. An image can therefore never fill an A4 page exactly without something giving way, either a margin on two sides or a strip cropped off.
With Fit the whole picture, the image is scaled by the smaller of the two ratios between page and picture, so it touches two edges of the page and the background colour fills the rest. With Crop to fill it is scaled by the larger ratio and the overflow is cut, from the area outside the crop box you positioned. Either way the output has exactly the pixel count for A4 at your chosen DPI, and that DPI is saved in the file so software reports the page as 210 × 297 mm.
Common problems and how to fix them
- There are white bands at the sides
- The picture has a different shape from the page, and the default keeps all of it. Choose Crop to fill to cover the page, or change the band colour with the background picker.
- The print is blurry
- The original has too few pixels for a full page. The result says how much it was enlarged. Use a lower DPI, or print the picture smaller on the page.
- The file is very large
- A4 at 300 DPI is 8.7 million pixels. Lower the quality slider, choose 200 DPI, or pass the result through the Image File Size Reducer.
- The printer still shrinks the page
- Printers leave an unprintable border and scale the page to fit inside it. Choose "actual size" or "100%" in the print dialog, and expect a few millimetres at the edges to be lost.
Frequently asked questions
What is A4 size in pixels?
It depends on the resolution: 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 DPI, 1654 × 2339 at 200 DPI, 1240 × 1754 at 150 DPI and 595 × 842 at 72 DPI. The paper is always 210 × 297 mm.
How do I fit a photo on A4 without cutting it?
Leave the fit on "Fit the whole picture". The image is scaled until it fits inside the page and the remaining space is filled with the background colour. Nothing is cropped.
Which DPI should I use for A4 printing?
300 DPI for photos and anything with fine detail. 150 to 200 DPI is enough for a document that will be read at arm's length, and it gives a much smaller file to upload or email.
Will a small image look good at A4?
Only if it has enough pixels. An image 1000 pixels wide stretched across an A4 page prints at about 120 DPI and looks soft. The result tells you when the picture had to be enlarged and by how much, so check it before you print.
What are the dimensions of A4 in inches and centimetres?
8.27 × 11.69 inches, or 21 × 29.7 cm. In millimetres it is 210 × 297, which is how the size is defined.
Can I make an A4 landscape image?
Yes. Tap "A4 landscape" under the size fields and the page becomes 297 mm wide and 210 mm high.
Is A4 the same as US Letter?
No. Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, slightly wider and shorter than A4. For Letter, use the inch resizer, which has it as a ready-made size.
