Resize a photo for a WhatsApp DP

WhatsApp makes every profile picture square, so a tall or wide photo loses its edges. This page puts the whole photo inside a square first, so nothing is cut off.

How to use the WhatsApp DP resizer

Add a photo and download the square version. Your whole picture is scaled to fit inside 640 × 640 pixels and the space beside it is filled with a border colour, so when you set it as your WhatsApp profile photo nothing has to be cropped.

  1. Add your photoTall, wide or already square: any shape works.
  2. Choose the border colourWhite by default. Black or a colour from the photo often looks better.
  3. Download and set it as your DPWhen WhatsApp shows its crop square, leave it at full size.

About this tool

When you choose a profile picture, WhatsApp asks you to crop it to a square, and then shows it as a circle in the chat list. A full-length portrait or a wide group photo cannot fit that square without losing something. The usual workaround is to give WhatsApp a picture that is already square, with the original sitting inside it and a border filling the gap.

That is what this page produces by default: a 640 × 640 pixel square with your whole photo scaled to fit and the rest filled with a colour you pick. WhatsApp publishes no size for the ordinary app. The 640 figure is the one its guidance for business profiles recommends, and it is large enough to stay sharp when the picture is opened full screen. If you would rather fill the square, switch to Crop to fill and drag the box over the part you want.

What you get

  • Keeps the whole photo inside a square, with nothing cut off
  • 640 × 640 pixels, or any size you type
  • Border in any colour
  • Crop to fill instead, with a square crop box you position
  • JPG or PNG output

When to use the WhatsApp DP resizer

A full-length photo as your profile picture

An upright portrait normally loses the head or the feet to WhatsApp's square crop; inside a square canvas it stays whole.

Group and family photos

A wide picture keeps everyone in it when it is fitted into the square with bands above and below.

Logos and business cards

A wide logo set as a business profile picture stays readable when it sits centred on a square of the brand colour.

Profile pictures for group chats

The same square file works as a group icon, which WhatsApp also shows as a circle.

How it works

Fitting works by comparing two ratios, the square's width to the photo's width and its height to the photo's height, and scaling by the smaller one. The photo then touches two sides of the square and falls short of the other two. The gap is split evenly, so the photo sits in the centre, and the canvas is painted with the border colour before the photo is drawn on top.

WhatsApp re-compresses whatever you give it, so the file's own quality setting matters less than its pixel count. A 640 pixel square is enough for the full-screen view on a phone; the 1080 option gives WhatsApp more to work from on high-resolution screens. Because chats show the picture as a circle, the corners of the square are hidden there: about a fifth of the area. A photo fitted with side borders loses only border to the circle, not picture.

Common problems and how to fix them

WhatsApp still asks me to crop
It always shows its crop square. Because the file is already square, leave the square at full size and confirm. Nothing will be removed.
The photo looks small inside the circle
A very tall or wide photo leaves large borders. Switch to Crop to fill and drag the box over the most important part, or crop the photo closer first.
The border colour clashes
Pick a colour from the photo's own background, or use black, which blends with dark mode. Type a hex value in the box beside the colour picker.
The picture is blurry after uploading
WhatsApp compresses profile photos. Start from a sharp original and try the 1080 × 1080 size so more detail survives.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP without cropping?

Add the photo above and download the square version. It contains your whole picture with a border on two sides. Set that file as your profile photo and leave WhatsApp's crop square at its full size.

What size should a WhatsApp profile picture be?

A square. WhatsApp's guidance for business profiles recommends 640 × 640 pixels and gives 192 × 192 as the minimum. The ordinary app states no figure, and 640 × 640 works well there too.

Why are the corners of my DP cut off?

WhatsApp shows profile pictures as a circle in chats and lists, so the corners of the square are hidden. Keep faces and anything important away from the corners. The full square is shown when someone opens the picture.

Which border colour looks best?

It depends on the photo. White is the default, black makes the photo stand out in dark mode, and a colour taken from the photo's own background makes the border less noticeable. Type a hex value or use the colour picker.

What does DP mean?

Display picture: the profile photo shown beside your name. On WhatsApp it appears as a small circle in chats and as a full square when someone taps it.

Can I use a blurred version of the photo as the border?

Not on this page. The border is a single flat colour. Choose a colour close to the edges of your photo for a similar effect.

Does this work for Instagram or Telegram profile pictures?

Yes, any app that wants a square. The size differs from app to app, so type the one you need in the size fields. For ready-made sizes across platforms, see the Social Media Image Resizer.
