About this tool
Websites increasingly serve pictures as AVIF because the files are much smaller than JPG at the same quality. The trouble starts when you save one: older photo viewers, office programs, printing kiosks and upload forms often reject the .avif extension.
This converter uses your browser's own AVIF decoder to read the file, then writes a standard JPG. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can all read AVIF. If your browser is too old to decode it, the page says so instead of producing a broken file.
What you get
- Reads AVIF with the browser's built-in decoder
- Real encoder quality slider
- Background colour for transparent AVIF files
- Optional resize while converting
- Batch up to 20 files with ZIP download
When to use the avif to jpg converter
Pictures saved from websites
Right-clicking an image on a modern site often saves an .avif file that your photo viewer will not open.
Inserting images into documents
Word processors and slide tools reject AVIF or show a blank box; the same picture as a JPG drops straight in.
Printing
Print shops and photo kiosks work from JPG. Convert first so the order goes through.
Uploading to forms and marketplaces
Upload fields check the extension, and .avif is rarely on the list.
AVIF and JPG compared
| Property | AVIF | JPG after conversion |
|---|---|---|
| File size at similar quality | Small | Often about twice as large |
| Opens in | Current browsers and some newer apps | Practically everything |
| Transparency | Supported | Filled with a background colour |
| Animation | Supported | First frame only |
| HDR and wide colour | Supported | Converted to standard 8-bit colour |
| Metadata | May hold EXIF | Not carried over |
How it works
AVIF stores a picture using the AV1 video codec, which is far more elaborate than the method JPG has used since 1992. That is where the small files come from, and also why support is uneven: every program that opens AVIF needs an AV1 decoder built in. Web browsers have one. Much other software does not, which is the gap this converter bridges.
The conversion happens entirely inside the page. Your browser decodes the AVIF into pixels, the page draws them onto a canvas, and the canvas is encoded as a JPG at the quality you set. The canvas works in standard 8-bit colour, so an HDR or wide-gamut AVIF is brought into that range on the way through, and the output is an ordinary JPG that behaves like any other.
Common problems and how to fix them
- The file will not load
- Your browser may be too old to decode AVIF, or the file may be damaged. Update the browser, or open the page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- The JPG is much larger than the AVIF
- That is expected, because JPG compresses less efficiently. Lower the quality slider to around 80, or switch on resizing if the picture is larger than you need.
- Colours look flatter than in the original
- The AVIF was HDR or used a wide colour range. JPG output here is standard 8-bit colour, so the brightest highlights and most saturated colours are brought into the normal range.
- An animated AVIF became a still
- Only the first frame is converted. Animated output is not supported.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Add the AVIF file above. It is decoded and re-saved as JPG in your browser, and the download is ready in a moment.
Why can't I open an AVIF file?
AVIF is a newer format, and support outside web browsers is still patchy. Older photo viewers, many office programs and most upload forms do not recognise it. Converting to JPG is the reliable fix.
Will the JPG be larger than the AVIF?
Almost always, often about twice the size at similar quality. That is the price of compatibility: AVIF compresses much more efficiently than JPG. Lower the quality slider if size matters.
Does it handle transparent, animated or HDR AVIF files?
Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, because JPG has no transparency. An animated AVIF is converted from its first frame. HDR and wide-colour files are converted to standard 8-bit colour, so very bright highlights lose their extra range.
Can I convert AVIF to JPG in bulk?
Yes. Add up to 20 AVIF files, press "Process all images" and download the JPGs together as a ZIP.
Is AVIF better than JPG?
For file size, yes: it gives the same visual quality in a much smaller file, and it supports transparency and HDR. JPG wins on compatibility, which is usually why people convert.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG or WebP instead?
Yes, with the Image Format Converter, which reads AVIF and writes JPG, PNG or WebP.
