About this tool

A collage puts several photos into one frame of a shape you choose: square for a profile post, 4:5 or 9:16 for a feed or a story, 3:2 or 16:9 for a print or a screen. Add the photos, pick a layout, and each photo is cropped to fill its place, so the frame is full and the spacing even.

There are four layouts. Grid shares the frame out in rows of near-square places and works for any number of photos. "First picture large" gives the first photo most of the frame and lines the others up beside or under it. Columns and Rows cut the frame into strips. The order of the photos is the order of the list, so moving a photo to the front makes it the large one.

The cropping is the same for every photo: around the centre unless you choose otherwise. Where faces sit high in the picture, choose Top so that heads are not cut off. If one photo needs a particular part shown, crop that photo first and add the cropped copy.

Project and progress boards

The stages of a build, a craft or a garden laid out in order in one image.

How it works

The frame is divided first and the photos fitted afterwards. For the grid, the page tries every possible number of rows and keeps the one whose places are, on average, closest to square for the frame's shape. When the photos do not divide evenly, the earlier rows hold one photo fewer, and those photos get larger places. Spacing is taken out before the division and the places are measured from shared cut lines, so the gaps are equal to the pixel and the outer edges are straight.

Each photo is then cropped to the shape of its place and scaled to its size. The crop takes the largest area of that shape the photo contains, centred unless you chose top or bottom, so a photo is never stretched. Rounded corners are a clipping path whose radius is a share of the smallest place, applied identically to every photo. If a photo has fewer pixels than its place needs, it is enlarged by ordinary interpolation, which the result note reports; nothing sharpens it or invents detail.

Common problems and how to fix them

Heads are cut off in some photos
Set "Part of each picture to keep" to Top. If only one photo is affected, crop that photo first so that its subject is central, then add the cropped copy.
One photo looks blurry
It is smaller than the place it fills and has been enlarged. Choose a smaller result size, move it to a smaller place by changing the order, or use a larger copy of the photo.
The places are long thin strips
Columns and Rows divide the frame into as many strips as there are photos. With more than four photos, switch to Grid.
The large photo is not the one I wanted
In "First picture large" the large place goes to photo 1. Use the arrows to move the photo you want to the front of the list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose which part of each photo is shown?

For all the photos together, yes: "Part of each picture to keep" can be the top, the centre or the bottom. Not for one photo at a time, and photos cannot be dragged inside their places. To control one photo exactly, crop it first with the Image Cropper and add the cropped file.

How many photos can I use?

From 2 to 12. With more than about six, the grid is the layout that keeps the places a usable size.

Can I keep my photos uncropped?

Not in a collage: the places have fixed shapes and each photo is cropped to fill one. To put whole pictures next to each other without losing any of them, use Join Images.

What size should I choose?

1080 pixels suits social posts, which are shown no larger. Choose 2000 or 3000 for printing, or for a picture that will be zoomed. A larger size cannot add detail your photos do not have; if a photo is smaller than its place, the note under the result says so.

Does the collage have a watermark?

No. Nothing is added to the picture: no logo, no text, and no border beyond the spacing you set.

Can I make a collage with a transparent background?

Yes. Choose PNG or WebP as the output format and switch on "Transparent background". The spaces between the photos, and the rounded corners if you use them, are then transparent.

Can I add text or stickers to the collage?

Not on this page. Download the collage and open it in Add Text to Image to put a caption on it.
