How to use the image joiner

Add two or more pictures, then choose Side by side, Stacked or In rows. The pictures are scaled to match the smallest so their edges line up, and the order follows the list, which you can rearrange with the arrows. Download one JPG, PNG or WebP.

About this tool

Joining is for pictures that belong together and matter in full: a before and an after, the front and back of a document, a run of screenshots, the pages of a receipt. Add the pictures, choose how they are arranged, and the page builds one image from them. Unlike a collage, nothing is cropped away to make the pictures fit a frame.

Pictures rarely arrive the same size, so by default each one is scaled to match the smallest: the height of the shortest when they sit side by side, the width of the narrowest when they are stacked. That makes the edges line up without enlarging anything. Switch it off to keep every picture at its own size, with the smaller ones lined up on an edge or in the middle.

The order is the order of the list above the result. Each picture there has arrows to move it and a button to take it out, and more can be added at any time.

What you get

  • Side by side, stacked, or in rows of 2 to 6
  • Every picture kept whole: nothing is cropped
  • Sizes matched to the smallest, so nothing is enlarged
  • Reorder with the arrows; add or remove at any time
  • Optional gap and border in any colour
  • Up to 20 pictures, and nothing is uploaded

When to use the image joiner

Before and after

Two photos side by side show a change at a glance: a renovation, a repair, an edit, a fitness record.

Both sides of a document

The front and back of an ID card or a certificate stacked into one image, where a form or a chat takes a single file.

A run of screenshots

Several screens of a conversation or a process, stacked in order, make one long picture that reads from top to bottom.

Product views

How it works

Each arrangement is worked out as a list of rectangles before anything is drawn. Side by side, the shortest picture sets the height and every other picture is scaled down to it, keeping its own proportions, so the widths differ and add up to the width of the result. Stacked is the same with width and height exchanged. In rows, the pictures are dealt out a fixed number to a row, each row is scaled so that its pictures together are exactly as wide as the result, and the rows therefore differ in height while no picture is cropped.

Scaling down is done in steps of a half followed by one final adjustment, which keeps fine lines and text sharper than a single large reduction. The gap is a share of the common height or width, so it looks the same on small sets and large ones. The finished image is held to about 33 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on a side; past that, the layout is recalculated at a smaller scale instead of failing. Pictures are read on your device, and when many large ones are added they are reduced as they come in so that the whole set fits in the tab's memory.

Common problems and how to fix them

The result is much smaller than my photos
One of the pictures is small, and with lining up on, the others are scaled down to match it. Remove the small picture, or switch off "Make them line up" to keep every picture at its own size.
The pictures are in the wrong order
Use the arrows on each picture in the list above the result. The numbers show the order: left to right, then top to bottom.
There are bands of colour beside some pictures
Lining up is off and the pictures differ in size, so the space beside the smaller ones is filled with the background colour. Switch lining up on, or choose a colour that suits.
A picture was left out when I added a batch
The page takes 20 pictures; any beyond that are not added, and a message says so. A file the browser cannot open as an image, such as a HEIC photo in most browsers, is also skipped.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the order of the pictures?

Each picture in the list has two arrows. They move it one place earlier or later, and the result is rebuilt straight away. The numbers on the pictures show the order: 1 is leftmost when side by side and topmost when stacked.

Why did my pictures get smaller?

With "Make them line up" on, every picture is scaled to the smallest one so that the edges meet evenly: the shortest height for side by side, the narrowest width for stacked. Bringing a small picture up to the size of a large one would mean inventing pixels, so the large ones come down instead. Turn the switch off to keep each at its own size.

Is there a limit on the size of the joined image?

Yes. The result is kept within about 33 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on its longest side, which is what browsers can reliably hold. If your pictures would join into something larger, everything is scaled down together and the note under the result says by how much. When many large pictures are added they are also reduced on the way in, so that all of them fit in memory at once.

Can I join a photo and a signature for a form?

Yes, stacked. The Merge Photo and Signature page is made for that job, though: it sets the signature's width against the photo and can hold the file under a size limit.

Does joining reduce the quality of my pictures?

Pictures that are scaled down lose the pixels that scaling removes, which cannot be avoided when sizes are matched. Beyond that, a JPG result is compressed once at the quality you set, 90 by default. Choose PNG for a result with no compression loss, at a larger file size.

Can I add more pictures after I have started?

Yes. Drop more files on the page, or press "Add pictures" at the end of the list. They go to the end; move them with the arrows. Each picture also has a button to remove it.

Can the gap between pictures be transparent?

Yes, with PNG or WebP as the output format: a "Transparent gaps" switch appears. JPG has no transparency, so there the gap takes the colour you choose.
