How to use the image splitter

Add a picture and set the number of rows and columns, from two pieces up to 10 by 10. The picture is cut into that many equal pieces, shown in place. Click one to save it, or download them all in a ZIP, named by row and column.

  1. Add your imageOne picture at a time.
  2. Set the rows and columnsAnything from two pieces up to 10 by 10.
  3. Download the piecesAll together as a ZIP, or one at a time by clicking a piece.

About this tool

Splitting is the reverse of joining. A long screenshot becomes pages, a scanned sheet of photos becomes separate photos, a wide panorama becomes a set to swipe through, a picture becomes puzzle tiles or a print spread over several sheets. Set how many rows and columns, and the picture is cut on those lines.

The cuts are placed so that the pieces cover the picture exactly. Each pixel of the original is in one piece and in no other, so nothing is trimmed off and nothing is repeated. When the size does not divide evenly, some pieces are one pixel wider or taller than their neighbours.

The pieces are shown in the positions they were cut from. Click one to save it alone, or take them all as a ZIP, named by row and column.

What you get

  • Up to 10 rows by 10 columns
  • Pieces cover the picture exactly: nothing lost, nothing repeated
  • Files named by row and column
  • Save one piece, or all of them as a ZIP
  • Keeps the original format, or JPG, PNG or WebP
  • Nothing is uploaded

When to use the image splitter

Long screenshots into pages

A full-page capture cut into several rows becomes a set of screens that are easier to read, share or print one at a time.

Scanned sheets

A scan holding several photos or cards laid out in a regular grid is cut into the separate items in one step.

Printing large across several sheets

A poster cut two by two prints on four sheets of paper, which are then joined edge to edge.

Panoramas and carousels

A wide picture cut into two or three columns becomes a set to swipe through, each slide continuing the last.

Sprite sheets and tile sets

A sheet of equally sized game sprites or icons is cut back into its individual frames.

How it works

The cut lines are placed at the rounded multiples of the width divided by the number of columns, and likewise down the height. Placing the lines, and not the piece sizes, is what guarantees a clean cut: every piece runs from one line to the next, so the pieces can neither overlap nor leave a strip uncovered, and their sizes add up to the original exactly. When a dimension is not a multiple of the count, the remainder is spread across the pieces one pixel at a time.

Each piece is copied out of the decoded picture and encoded as its own file. With "Same as input", a JPG gives JPG pieces and a PNG gives PNG pieces. PNG pieces are lossless copies of the pixels as the browser decoded them. JPG and WebP pieces are each compressed independently, so an edge that crosses a cut is encoded twice, once on each side. Colour profiles and EXIF data are not carried into the pieces, and an animated picture gives pieces of its first frame only.

Common problems and how to fix them

The pieces are not all the same size
The picture's width or height is not a multiple of the number of pieces, so some are one pixel larger. To get identical pieces, first resize or crop the picture to a size that divides evenly, for example 3000 px wide for three columns.
The cut goes through the middle of something
The cuts are always evenly spaced. Crop the picture first so that the content sits where the lines fall, or change the number of rows or columns.
The ZIP has many small files and I only wanted one
Click that piece in the preview to download it by itself.
Pieces of a transparent PNG have a white background
The output format is set to JPG, which has no transparency. Set it to "Same as input" or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut at a position I choose, not into equal parts?

Not on this page: it cuts into equal rows and columns. To take one particular area out of a picture, use the Image Cropper, once for each part.

Will the pieces fit back together exactly?

Their pixel sizes always add up to the original, and no pixel is shared or dropped. Saved as PNG, which is lossless, the pieces hold the same pixels the picture had when it was opened here. Saved as JPG or WebP, each piece is compressed on its own, which is lossy; at the default quality the joins are not visible in normal use.

How are the files named?

After the original, with the row and the column added: photo-r1-c1.jpg is the top left piece and photo-r1-c2.jpg the one to its right. In the ZIP they sort in reading order.

I want to split a picture for an Instagram grid. Is this the right page?

Use the Instagram Grid Maker. It cuts three across, gives every tile the same shape, and numbers the tiles in the order to post them.

What is the largest number of pieces?

100: ten rows by ten columns. The pieces are made one after another in your browser, so a large picture cut into many pieces takes a few seconds.

Can I split several pictures at once?

One picture at a time. Each picture's pieces are named after it, so pieces from different pictures do not collide if you save them to the same folder.
