How to use the jfif to jpg converter

Add your .jfif files and download them as .jpg. A JFIF file is already a JPEG, so each one is copied unchanged and given the .jpg extension that photo viewers and upload forms recognise. No quality is lost, and up to 20 files can be done at once.

  1. Add your .jfif filesUp to 20 at a time.
  2. Nothing to setThe picture is copied as it is, so there are no quality options.
  3. Download the .jpg filesOne by one, or together as a ZIP.

About this tool

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the standard way JPEG image data is wrapped into a file, in use since the early 1990s, so a .jfif file and a .jpg file hold the same kind of data. The extension shows up mainly on Windows, where saving a picture from a web browser can produce a .jfif file instead of a .jpg.

Many programs and upload forms do not recognise the extension and refuse the file. Because the content is already a JPEG, there is nothing to convert: this page copies the file and names it .jpg. No pixels are re-encoded and no quality is lost.

What you get

  • Turns .jfif files into .jpg files
  • No re-compression and no quality loss
  • Checks that each file really is a JPEG first
  • Works on files of any pixel size, up to 50 MB
  • Batch up to 20 files with ZIP download

When to use the jfif to jpg converter

Images saved from a browser on Windows

Pictures saved from web pages sometimes land in the Downloads folder as .jfif, and other programs then refuse to open them.

Uploading to social and shopping sites

Upload buttons filter by extension and usually do not offer .jfif files at all.

Editing in photo software

Some editors do not list .jfif in their open dialog even though they can read the data inside.

Sending pictures to other people

A .jpg attachment opens with a tap on any phone; a .jfif attachment often prompts for an app.

How it works

JPEG itself only defines how picture data is compressed. JFIF, published in the early 1990s, added the small header that turns that data into a self-contained file: it records the pixel density and marks the file as a standard JPEG. Every JPEG reader understands that layout, so a .jfif file needs no special handling to be read as a .jpg.

The unusual extension comes from the operating system, not the image. When a browser saves a picture whose type is JPEG, it can ask Windows which extension belongs to that type, and on some installations the answer is .jfif. The saved file is byte for byte what the website sent. This page verifies that it starts with the JPEG signature and returns the same bytes with a .jpg name.

Common problems and how to fix them

It says the file is not a JPEG
A few .jfif files are another format under the wrong name. Use the Image to JPG Converter, which decodes the picture and saves a true JPG.
My browser keeps saving pictures as .jfif
That is a Windows setting for the JPEG file type, not something a website can change. Until it is fixed, convert the files here, or type a name ending in .jpg in the Save dialog.
I cannot see the extension to check it
Windows hides extensions by default. The Type column in File Explorer shows "JFIF File", or you can turn on "File name extensions" in the View menu.
The picture needs to be smaller as well
This page does not compress. Convert the file here, then run the .jpg through the JPG Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a JFIF file?

A JPEG image saved with the .jfif extension. JFIF is the name of the file layout most JPEGs use, so the content is the same as a .jpg file.

Why did my picture save as .jfif?

It happens on Windows when a browser asks the system which extension goes with a JPEG and gets .jfif back. The picture is not damaged or different; only the name is unusual.

Does converting JFIF to JPG lose quality?

No. The image data is copied unchanged and only the extension becomes .jpg.

Can I just rename the file myself?

Yes. Renaming .jfif to .jpg works, if your system shows file extensions. This page does the same thing for up to 20 files at once and checks that each one really is a JPEG first.

How do I convert a JFIF file to JPG?

Add the .jfif file above and download the .jpg copy. The picture is not re-encoded, so it is identical to the original.

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

In practice, yes. JFIF is the name of the standard file layout for JPEG data, and a .jfif file opens as a JPEG in any program that looks at its contents instead of its name.

Can I convert several JFIF files at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files, press "Process all images" and download the .jpg files as a ZIP.
