About this tool
The Kerala Public Service Commission's notifications set out the photograph precisely: 200 pixels in height and 150 in width, in JPG format, with a file size not exceeding 30 KB. The face and shoulders must be clear against a white or light background, and the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken must be printed at the bottom.
Getting the name and date onto the picture is the step that sends people to a studio. Here you type them and they are printed on a white strip at the foot of the photo; the portrait is cropped to fit the space above. A signature size of 150 × 100 pixels is also offered. That figure is the one application guides publish, and it is not confirmed by a Commission page, so compare it with the upload screen. Other state commissions use their own sizes, which you can type into the same fields.

How it works
When you type a name and a date, the bottom fifth of the picture is set aside for them: 40 of the 200 pixels. The strip is filled with white and the two lines are drawn in black, centred, each in the largest type that fits its line, and a long name is set smaller until it fits the 150 pixel width. The portrait is cropped to the 150 × 160 pixels that remain, which is why the crop box changes shape as soon as you start typing.
A 150 × 200 pixel picture holds 30,000 pixels, and a JPG of that size is about 10 KB at high quality, so the 30 KB ceiling is rarely a problem. The quality is still searched: the highest setting that keeps the file under 30,000 bytes is used. No resolution value is written to the file on this page, because the Commission states the size in pixels and a DPI would mean nothing to it.
Common problems and how to fix them
- The name is too small to read
- A long name has to shrink to fit 150 pixels. Use the form of your name the Commission's instructions ask for, and drop titles or extra initials if they are not required.
- Part of my head is cut off
- The crop box was sized for the area above the text. Drag it so there is a little space above your hair and your shoulders are just in view.
- The background is not white
- This page does not change the background. Retake the photo against a white or light wall, or try the Background Colour Changer if the background is one flat colour.
- The upload page says the photo is invalid
- Check that both the pixel size and the file size in the result match what the page asks for. If it shows different figures from the ones here, type those into the fields.
