Round the corners of an image

Soften the corners of a picture, a little or a lot. The area cut away is left transparent, so the rounded image drops onto any background.

How to use the corner rounding tool

Add the picture and move the Roundness slider. Around 10 to 20% gives the soft corners of an app card; 100% turns the shorter sides into half-circles. The cut-away corners are transparent and the result downloads as a PNG.

  1. Add your imageIts corners are rounded straight away at a moderate setting.
  2. Set the roundnessFrom a slight curve to a full pill.
  3. Download the PNGWith transparent corners.

About this tool

Rounded corners are a small change that makes a screenshot or a photo look finished: app previews, cards on a slide, thumbnails on a website. One slider sets how round. At the low end it is a gentle curve; at the top the shorter sides become full half-circles, which turns a square picture into a circle and a wide one into a pill.

The roundness is a share of the picture's size, so a set of images at different resolutions gets the same look from one setting. The result is a PNG, because the cut-away corners need to be transparent. If you must have a JPG, choose it and pick a corner colour that matches where the picture will go.

What you get

  • One slider from slight to fully round
  • Same look at any resolution
  • Transparent corners, or a colour of your choice
  • Batch up to 20 images

When to use the corner rounding tool

App and website screenshots

Rounded screenshots on a slide or a landing page look like the device or the card they came from.

Thumbnails and cards in documents

Pictures placed in a report or a newsletter sit more comfortably with slightly softened corners.

Icons and tiles

A square graphic rounded to 20 or 25% has the shape of a typical app icon.

Pill-shaped banners and buttons

A wide strip at 100% roundness becomes a pill, for a badge or a button image.

How it works

The radius is the roundness setting applied to half of the picture's shorter side, so 100% is the largest radius that still fits. A path is built from four straight edges joined by four quarter-circle arcs of that radius, the path is set as a clipping region, and the picture is drawn through it. Along the arcs the edge is anti-aliased, with boundary pixels made partly transparent, so the curve is smooth at any size.

Because the radius is relative, a 4000 pixel photo and a 400 pixel thumbnail given the same setting have corners of the same apparent shape. The picture is not scaled or cropped; only the four corner regions are cleared. Those regions are transparent in PNG and WebP. For JPG, which has no transparency, they are painted with the colour you choose before the picture is drawn.

Common problems and how to fix them

The corners look square after uploading
The destination flattened the transparency onto its own colour, or converted the file to JPG. Set the output to JPG here and choose a corner colour matching that background.
The corners are too round or not round enough at 100%
At 100% the radius equals half the shorter side, which is the maximum. For a different shape, such as an oval, a different tool is needed; this one draws circular arcs only.
There is a faint line along the curved edge
The picture was placed on a background of a different colour from the one its edge was blended towards. Use the transparent PNG, which blends correctly onto anything.
The file is larger than the original JPG
PNG stores every pixel exactly and is larger than JPG for photographs. Choose WebP for a smaller file that keeps the transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the corners white after I upload the picture somewhere?

That site or app converted your PNG to JPG, which has no transparency, or it shows pictures on a white card. If the corners must blend in there, switch off "Transparent outside the shape" and choose the background colour of the place it will appear.

How do I make a square picture into a circle?

Set Roundness to 100. On a square image that gives a perfect circle. If you want to choose which part of the photo ends up inside the circle, the Circle Crop tool lets you position it.

Is it better to round corners in the image or with CSS?

On your own website, use CSS (border-radius): it is sharper at every screen size and needs no transparency. Round the image itself when it is going somewhere you do not control the styling, such as a slide deck, a document, an email or a chat.

Can I round only some of the corners?

No. All four corners get the same radius.

Can I round the corners of many images at once?

Yes, up to 20. They all get the same roundness, and since it is relative to each picture's size they will match in shape even at different resolutions.

Does rounding the corners crop my picture?

Only the corners themselves. The width and height are unchanged, and everything away from the four corners is exactly as it was.
