About this tool

An image file is always a rectangle. A "round" picture is a square one whose corners are transparent, so that whatever is behind it shows through. This page crops your photo to a square around the circle you place and clears everything outside the circle, then saves it as a PNG, which can hold that transparency.

Drag the circle to move it and pull a corner handle to change its size; it stays a true circle. If you need a JPG, which cannot be transparent, the corners are filled with a colour you choose instead. Pick the colour of the page the picture will sit on and the join will not show.

What you get

  • A true circle you can move and resize
  • Transparent corners in PNG and WebP
  • Coloured corners for JPG
  • Full resolution of the area you select
  • Nothing is uploaded

When to use the circle crop tool

Website avatars and team pages

A row of round portraits needs each file to be round already when the page does not mask them for you.

Presentations and documents

A circular photo dropped onto a slide or a CV looks deliberate, and transparent corners let any background show through.

Email signatures

A small round headshot beside your name, saved as PNG so that it sits cleanly on white and on dark mode alike.

Stickers, badges and labels

Artwork for round stickers or button badges is easier to check and to print when it is already cut to the circle.

How it works

The selection is kept square, so the circle inside it is a true circle. On download, that square is cut from the original picture at full resolution, a circular clipping path is applied whose diameter is the side of the square, and the picture is drawn through it. The edge of the circle is anti-aliased: pixels the curve passes through are made partly transparent in proportion to how much of them falls inside, which is what keeps the rim smooth instead of stepped.

PNG and WebP store that partial transparency exactly. JPG has no transparency at all, so for JPG the square is first filled with the colour you choose and the circle is drawn on top; the smooth rim then blends into that colour. The result is the same number of pixels across as the circle you drew, so a small circle on a small photo gives a small file: enlarging it afterwards cannot add detail.

Common problems and how to fix them

The circle will not go where I want
It cannot leave the picture. If the subject is close to an edge, make the circle smaller, or start from a photo with more room around the subject.
The result looks square when I open it
The file is a square with transparent corners. A viewer that shows transparency as white or black makes it look square. Place it on a coloured background to see the circle.
The edge has a thin pale or dark rim
That appears when a transparent PNG is flattened onto a different colour by another program. Export as JPG here with the corner colour set to the real background, and the rim will match.
The round picture is too big or too small for its slot
Resize it with the Image Resizer, keeping the format as PNG so the corners stay transparent.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my round picture have white or black corners somewhere else?

The place you used it does not support transparency, or the picture was converted to JPG on the way, which fills transparent areas with a solid colour. Use the PNG as downloaded. If the destination only accepts JPG, switch the output format here and set the corner colour to match its background.

Do I need a circle crop for a profile picture?

Often not. Most social networks and chat apps ask for a square image and apply the round mask themselves. A circle crop is for places that show the file as it is: a website, a presentation, a document, an email signature.

What size will the result be?

A square whose side is the diameter of your circle, in the original pixels of the photo. Nothing is enlarged or reduced. To get a particular size, such as 400 × 400, put the result through the Image Resizer and keep PNG as the format.

Can I crop to an oval?

Not on this page; the shape is always a circle. For an irregular shape, the Freehand Crop tool lets you draw the outline yourself.

Can I crop several photos to circles at once?

No. The circle is positioned on one particular picture, and the same position would frame something different on the next, so each photo is done separately.

Will the circle crop keep the quality of my photo?

Yes. The area inside the circle is copied at its original resolution, with no scaling. As a PNG it is stored without further loss.
