About this tool
A rectangle is the wrong shape for most things worth cutting out. Here you trace the outline yourself, with a mouse, a trackpad, a pen or a finger. When you let go, the line closes back to where it started, the area outside it is dimmed so you can see what will go, and the cut-out appears below. Draw again to replace it.
The edge of the cut-out follows your hand exactly, so it is as accurate as your tracing and no more. Nothing here finds the edge of an object for you, and this is not an automatic background remover. For a rough cut-out, a sticker or a shape to paste into a collage it is quick; for a clean product cut-out against a plain backdrop, the Background Colour Changer will usually do better.
What you get

When to use the freehand crop tool
Stickers and cut-outs for chats
A person, a pet or an object traced out of a photo makes a quick sticker to paste into a message or a story.
Pieces for a collage or a mood board
Irregular shapes cut from several pictures layer more naturally than a stack of rectangles.
Removing something at the edge
Tracing just inside an unwanted object at the border of a picture keeps the rest and drops it.
Isolating a detail to show someone
Draw round the one part of a diagram, a map or a screenshot you are asking about and send only that.
Getting a cleaner outline
| Situation | What helps | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shaky line with a finger | Zoom the browser in first, or use a stylus | A larger target needs less precision |
| Shaky line with a mouse | Draw slowly, in one continuous stroke | Points are recorded as you move; speed leaves gaps |
| Subject on a plain background | Use the Background Colour Changer instead | Colour keying follows the real edge |
| Subject touching the picture's edge | Draw past the edge and come back | The line is held at the border, so nothing is lost |
| Outline must not show the background | Draw slightly inside the subject | A cut just inside leaves no fringe |
How it works
While you draw, the position of the pointer is recorded each time it moves by more than a small fraction of the picture's size, as a fraction of the picture's width and height, so the outline is independent of how large the picture is shown. On release the last point is joined to the first to close the shape, and the outline is converted to the pixel coordinates of the full-resolution original, however small the on-screen preview was.
The smallest rectangle containing the outline is cut from the original, the outline is applied to it as a clipping path, and the picture is drawn through it. Edges are anti-aliased, so slanted parts of the line are smooth, but the cut is otherwise hard: there is no feathering and no attempt to follow the edge of an object. Outside the path the result is transparent in PNG and WebP, or filled with your chosen colour for JPG.
Common problems and how to fix them
- Nothing appears after I add the picture
- The cut-out is made once an outline exists. Press and drag on the picture to draw around something, and let go.
- The page scrolls instead of drawing on my phone
- Start the stroke on the picture itself and keep your finger down. Scroll the page from outside the picture.
- The outline closed across the middle of my subject
- The shape closes in a straight line from where you let go to where you started. Finish the stroke near its starting point so the closing line is short.
- The edge of the cut-out is rough
- It follows your hand exactly. Redraw more slowly, or with the browser zoomed in. For a subject on a plain background, the Background Colour Changer gives a truer edge.
Frequently asked questions
Does it detect the edges of the object for me?
No. The cut follows the line you draw and nothing else. There is no edge snapping and no AI subject detection on this site. Zooming your browser in before drawing, or using a pen or mouse instead of a finger, gives a steadier line.
How do I undo or redo the outline?
Simply draw again. A new line replaces the old one, and the result updates when you let go. There is no need to clear anything first.
Why is the result smaller than my picture?
It is trimmed to the smallest rectangle that holds your shape, so that no empty margin is saved around it. The pixels inside the outline are untouched: nothing is scaled.
Can I get a soft or feathered edge?
No, the edge is sharp. It is smoothed just enough to avoid a jagged staircase along slanted parts of the line, but it does not fade out.
Is this the same as removing the background?
No. Background removal works out where the subject ends; here you decide by drawing. This site has no automatic subject cut-out. What it does have is colour keying, which clears a background that is one flat colour.
Can I cut out several separate areas at once?
One outline per pass. For two pieces from the same picture, download the first, then draw the second and download again.
