About this tool

This page sets your text in a handwriting typeface on a sheet of A4, on ruled lines if you want them, in pen blue or any ink you choose. It is for things that should look written by hand and not printed: a note, a card, a poster for a classroom, a mock-up of a notebook page, a sheet for handwriting practice.

Type set straight on the lines looks typed, however curly the letters. So each word is placed a little above or below the line, turned by a fraction of a degree and made very slightly larger or smaller, and each line starts at a slightly different point and drifts up or down as it goes. The Unevenness slider sets how far. The arrangement is worked out from the text itself, so the same text always gives the same page and nothing jumps about while you adjust the settings.

It remains a typeface. Every letter "a" has the same shape, which real handwriting never has, and it is not your handwriting. Someone who looks closely can tell. If you are thinking of handing a page in as work written by hand, whether that is acceptable is a question for whoever set the work, not for this page.

Hindi is written in Kalam, a typeface made for Devanagari. The other five have Latin letters only, and Hindi words typed with one of them selected are written in Kalam automatically. Long text runs on to further pages, up to twelve.

When to use the text to handwriting converter

Notes, cards and invitations

A short message that reads as written by hand, for a card, an invitation or a note to slip into a parcel.

Classroom material

Posters, labels and worksheet headings in a friendly hand instead of a computer font.

Handwriting practice sheets

A passage set on wide ruled lines for a child to read and then copy underneath.

Design mock-ups

A notebook page, a diary entry or a letter as a prop in a video, a presentation or a social post.

How it works

The page is an A4 sheet drawn at 150 or 300 dots per inch. Ruled lines are placed at the spacing you choose, starting 32 mm from the top, with a margin line 30 mm from the left edge on lined paper. The text is broken into words and each word is measured in the chosen typeface. Words are set along a line until the next one would cross the right margin, and a word too long for a line is broken where it runs out. A blank line in your text is a blank line on the page.

Each word is then drawn on its own. Its baseline is moved up or down by a fraction of the line gap, it is turned a little, by up to about a degree and a half either way at the highest setting, its size varies by a few percent, the spaces between words vary, and the ink is made very slightly lighter or darker. Each line also begins at a slightly different distance from the margin and slopes a little. The amounts come from a sequence of numbers generated from the text, not from chance, which is why the page is identical every time for the same text and typeface. Words are kept whole because Hindi, and joined-up faces, depend on each letter meeting its neighbours.

Common problems and how to fix them

The text is in an ordinary font, not handwriting
The typeface file had not arrived when the page was drawn, usually on a slow connection. Change any setting to draw the page again. If it persists, reload: the typefaces are fetched from this site when first used.
Hindi text looks printed
Hindi is written in Kalam. If the letters look like a standard font, Kalam's Hindi file has not loaded yet; change a setting to redraw. Scripts other than Latin and Devanagari have no handwriting face here.
The writing does not sit on the lines
That is the unevenness. Lower the slider for a neater hand; at 0 every word sits exactly on its line.
A long word is split across two lines
A word or a web address too long for one line is broken where it runs out of room. Put a space where you would rather it broke.
The writing is too large or too small for the lines
Change "Size of the writing", which is measured against the line spacing, or pick a different spacing.

Frequently asked questions

Will it look like real handwriting?

At a glance, yes; under a close look, no. The words wander on the line as a hand does, but every letter is the same shape each time it appears, because the letters come from a typeface. The looser faces, Caveat and Homemade Apple, hide that best.

Can it write in my own handwriting?

No. It uses six ready-made typefaces. Making a typeface from your own writing is a different job, which needs a sample of every letter, and this page does not do it.

Which languages does it support?

English and other languages written in the Latin alphabet with common accents, in all six typefaces, and Hindi and other Devanagari text in Kalam. Other scripts are written in whatever font your device has for them, which will not look handwritten.

How much text fits on a page?

With medium ruling an A4 page has 32 lines, which is roughly 230 to 300 words depending on the typeface and on how many paragraph breaks there are. Narrower ruling fits more. When the text overflows, a new page is started automatically.

Can I download the pages as a PDF?

The pages download as images. To make one PDF of them, add the downloaded pages to Image to PDF, which puts one image on each page.

Why does the same text always produce the same page?

On purpose. The small shifts are calculated from the text, so the page does not rearrange itself each time a setting is touched. Change a word, and the arrangement changes.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The page is drawn by your browser. Only the typeface files are fetched from this site, and they are the same for everyone.
