  2. Add the image and position the boxFor the signature, include all three signatures inside the box.
  3. Download the JPGThe result shows the pixel size, the file size and whether it is inside the range.

About this tool

UPSC states its limits in pixels and kilobytes. Its application FAQ gives 350 × 350 pixels as the minimum and 1000 × 1000 as the maximum for both images, in JPG or JPEG. The examination notices for 2026 narrow the file sizes: the photograph must be between 20 and 200 KB, and the signature no more than 100 KB. The same notices ask you to sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on plain white paper, and upload all three as a single image.

This page starts from sizes that sit inside those limits: a 600 × 600 pixel photograph and a 500 × 400 pixel signature image. Both are choices, not figures from UPSC, and you can type any others. The crop box keeps the shape of the output, and the JPG is saved at a quality that puts the file inside the range. Limits can change with each notice, so read yours first. This site has no connection with the Commission.

When to use the UPSC photo and signature resizer

Civil Services application

The Common Application Form takes an uploaded photograph and a signature image in addition to the live photo.

The Common Application Form

The 2026 notices have you upload the photograph and the signature image while you fill in the common form.

Other UPSC examinations

The CAPF notice for 2026 carries the same limits as Civil Services: JPG, the photograph between 20 and 200 KB and the signature no more than 100 KB.

A triple signature that is too small

Three signatures on white paper often make a file under 20 KB, which the form refuses until it is brought up to the minimum.

How it works

UPSC's limits are a band, not a single size: any JPG from 350 to 1000 pixels on each side passes. A square of 600 pixels was chosen for the photograph because it is well clear of both ends and shows a face clearly. The signature preset is 500 pixels wide and 400 high, which leaves room for three signatures stacked one below the other, as the 2026 notices require. Neither figure comes from UPSC, and the fields accept any other size in the band.

File size is handled separately from pixel size. The picture is encoded as a JPG at up to eight quality settings between 8% and 96%, and the best one under the upper limit is kept. The upper limit is counted at 1,000 bytes to the kilobyte and the lower at 1,024, so the file passes whichever way the form counts. A file that is still under 20 KB at full quality is topped up with filler stored in a comment segment, which leaves every pixel as it was.

Common problems and how to fix them

The form rejects the signature as too small
Check the file size shown in the result. If the smallest-size box was cleared, the 20 KB minimum is not applied. Put 20 back in the box and download again.
Only one of my three signatures is in the picture
The crop box has to contain all three. Drag its lower edge down until the third signature is inside, then shrink the sides so they sit close to the writing.
The face looks small in the photograph
Guides to the form say the face should fill about three quarters of the frame. Make the crop box smaller so the head and shoulders fill it, with a little space above the hair.
The uploaded and live photos do not match
Guides to the form report that it compares the two. Use a recent photograph in which you look as you do now, with the same glasses and hairstyle, and take the live photo in good light.

Frequently asked questions

What photo size does UPSC accept?

A JPG or JPEG between 350 × 350 and 1000 × 1000 pixels, according to the application FAQ. The 2026 examination notices set the file size at 20 to 200 KB. The 600 × 600 pixel preset here sits in the middle of the pixel band.

What is the UPSC signature size?

A JPG of no more than 100 KB and no less than 20 KB, within the same pixel band as the photo. The 2026 notices ask for three signatures, one below the other, in black ink on white paper, uploaded as one image. The preset here is 500 × 400 pixels, tall enough for three.

My signature file is under 20 KB. What can I do?

A signature on white paper compresses very well and often falls below the minimum. This page raises the quality first and, if the file is still too small, adds filler data inside the file to reach 20 KB. The picture is not changed by the filler.

Does this replace the live photo?

No. The 2026 notices ask for an uploaded photograph and a live photograph captured while you fill in the form. This page prepares the uploaded one. The live one is taken by the application itself.

Why three signatures for UPSC?

The 2026 examination notices ask applicants to sign three times, one below the other, on plain white paper in black ink and to upload all three as one image. The Commission does not explain the reason in the notice. Sign on one sheet and photograph the whole group.

What pixel size should I choose?

Anything from 350 to 1000 pixels on each side meets the stated limits. The presets here, 600 × 600 for the photograph and 500 × 400 for the signature, are convenient sizes inside that band. Change them if your notice gives a specific figure.

Does the photo need my name and the date on it?

Some guides say so, but it could not be confirmed from a UPSC document while this page was written. Follow the instructions shown in the application itself. This page does not print text on the UPSC photograph.
