Convert images between formats

Change a picture from one format to another, or put pictures into a PDF. Pick the page named for your two formats, or use the one converter that does them all.

Three reasons to convert

Almost every conversion comes down to one of three reasons. Something will not open the file, so it has to become a JPG. The file is too heavy for a web page, so it should become a WebP. Or the picture has a transparent background that must survive, so it has to stay a PNG or become a WebP. If you know which of those you are in, you know which format to ask for.

The pages below are the same converter set up in advance for one pair of formats, with the setting that matters for that pair in front of you: the background colour when a transparent PNG becomes a JPG, the quality when a photo becomes a WebP. Which formats your browser can write is checked when the page loads, and one it cannot write is switched off, not faked.

Two limits apply to all of them. An animated GIF or WebP is converted as its first frame only, and the colour profile and EXIF data of the original are not carried into the new file. A photo that only has an unfamiliar extension, such as .jpeg or .jfif, is a different case: the two renaming pages hand it back unchanged, with no loss at all.

To JPG, for anything that must open everywhere

JPG is the format every form, printer and older program accepts. A transparent background becomes a colour you choose, because JPG cannot hold transparency.

To WebP or PNG, for the web and for editing

WebP gives the smallest file for a web page and keeps transparency. PNG is for a picture you will go on editing, or one with sharp edges and flat colour.

Any format to any other

One page with every direction, for when you are not sure which you need or have a mixed batch.

Pictures into a PDF

One picture to a page, in the order you set. The pages with a size in their name fit the PDF under that limit. They make new PDFs from pictures; they do not open or edit an existing PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I convert my image to?

JPG if it has to open anywhere or go on a form. WebP if it is going on a website. PNG if it has transparency or text and you will edit it again. The guide to image formats goes through the choice in detail.

Does converting an image lose quality?

Converting to PNG does not: PNG stores every pixel exactly. Converting to JPG or WebP does, slightly at the default settings and more as you lower the quality. Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back detail the JPG had already lost; it only stops more being lost in later edits.

Can I convert HEIC, RAW or TIFF files?

Only if your browser can open them, and most cannot. These pages read what the browser itself can decode: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG and, in current browsers, AVIF. A HEIC photo from an iPhone usually has to be exported as a JPG on the phone first.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes, up to 20 at a time on the converter pages, and the results download together as a ZIP. Each file may be up to 50 MB.
